You are invited to join Becca Chapman and Alex Smith (Co-Founders of Prescription Joy: the new organization dedicated to bringing Medical Clowning to the New Orleans area and beyond) at their Spring fundraiser and launch party “Medical Clowning Fundraiser” on March 5th, 2018 at the Fortress of Lushington.
Medical Clowning uses humor and human connection to aid in healing patients, families, and even staff members. Prescription Joy creates an environment of joy and healing for all. Alex Smith was last seen onstage as “Manfred” in Le Petit’s Sleeping Beauty and can be currently caught monthly as the dastardly dashing Nigel Killjoy in Debauchery. Becca Chapman is a Fourth Grade teacher at Trinity Episcopal School and an award-winning local actress who was last seen as “Esme” in NOLA Project’s Spider Queen. Together they are theatrical clowns that have learned under and trained with professional clown instructors across the nation. They are excited about bringing clowning to New Orleans hospitals to assist in healing through play!
Prescription Joy’s two initial clowns Joe and Goe (pronounced ‘joe’) debuted at Children’s Hospital uptown this past summer with great success, and are currently in communication with Ochsner’s Hospital for Children located on Jefferson Hwy. The positive feedback received from patients, parents, and hospital staff has proved that Medical Clowning can truly impact the healing process at a fundamental level. New Orleans and the region need an organization to develop personal connections and promote healing through humor and play.
Prescription Joy’s Fundraiser will be a combination of performances and carnival style games. Come see local clowning performances by Joe and Goe (Alex Smith and Becca Chapman), Darci Fulcher, Owen Ever, Glenna Broderick, along with musical performances by Rebecca Zoë Leigh, Caroline Fourmy, and David Symons & Jennie Lavine with Klezervation Hall as well as our incomparable MC, Grace Kennedy. Games like: Cornhole with actual husks of corn, Jenga, Operation, a Thumb Wrestling Station, and reverse Pinata (where you have to rebuild and refill a pinata while blindfolded)! Guests are encouraged to bring friends, family, and their inner child.
The fundraiser will also feature both an online auction, silent auction, and a live auction featuring many of the community’s artists and resources for healing and entertainment. Online auction items can be bid on through Prescription Joy’s website www.prescriptionjoy.org until March 10th. La Cocinita Food Truck will be parked outside selling their delicious items, and margaritas from La Carreta Mexican Restaurant, wine, and beer will be sold for purchase inside.
Prescription Joy is currently under the fiscal sponsorship of Goat in the Road Productions, which allows the organization to accept tax-deductible donations. Donations can be accepted at the event as well as on the website: www.prescriptionjoy.org.
